Reader’s Question:

I live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and it is really not cheap to park your car here so I garaged my vehicle in my girlfriend’s house in the suburbs. Is it legal if I change my zip code (where the vehicle is parked) in my car insurance information.

Sam

Philadelphia, PA

The place where the vehicle is garaged is typically where you live majority of the time regardless of where you garage your vehicle occasionally. Even though you use your girlfriend’s garaging address to keep your vehicle, you likely still need to operate the car to where you live, by using your automobile on a regular basis. So your residential address would be the similar as your garaging address.

Insurance carrier’s guidelines can vary though so I would recommend that you speak with your insurance carrier to know what rules they have for garaging addresses. If how you are garaging the automobile is acceptable to them and permitted according to their rules and guidelines then you may be able to use the garaging address.

If the insurance carrier does not allow this, you might think about shopping around for car insurance and obtaining auto insurance rates from other insurance companies to check if you can get cheaper premiums in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Reader’s Question:

I live in MI and am planning to move to Altoona, Pennsylvania. I want to keep my auto insurance in Michigan. My father said that in Pennsylvania they won’t honor my car insurance policy in case of an accident. Is this true?

Fields

Altoona, PA

Yes, your father is correct, but you would need to speak to your auto insurance agent to be sure how your insurance provider will deal with your move in Pennsylvania.

The insurance provider would need to be informed about you and the car relocating to PA. The insurance company would then say if you would be able to stay on your father’s policy but normally the answer would be no. When you move away from home, and the vehicle is no longer garaged at the home address listed on the car insurance policy an insurance company will usually no longer carry you and the car on the current car insurance policy.

You may need to speak with your father if either your name being added to the title of the car or signing it over to you completely.

Q: I filed a claim with my car insurance company and they’ve responded really badly. Can I get any SR22 help?

A: You might be able to get some SR22 help if you have some proof to back up the assertion that your car insurance company has handled your claim very badly. The Pennsylvania Department of Insurance has a complaint department, and you can file a complain online, over the phone, or on paper about what your car insurance company has done. If you have a good reason, the Department of Insurance will then investigate your complaint, which could lead to compensation for you and punishment for the car insurance company.

Typically, it goes like this. You file a complaint for your SR22 DOI then looks at your complaint and sends you a follow up requesting documentation of your complaint, and you send it in so they can make their final decision. Make sure you keep track of all of your records concerning your claim so that you have it for proof, and if possible record or write down what customer service representatives for your company say any time you talk to them, as well as writing down who you are talking to and their representative number if they have one.
