Q: How long do I have to maintain SR22 financial responsibility for?
A: This depends on what state you come from. Since Pennsylvania itself does not require you to hold SR22 financial responsibility, then the requirement limits will be set by the state which originaly ordered you to maintain SR22 insurance. Most states have this time period of around three years, although some states, such as Texas, only require two. Depending on how many times you have committed the offense your license was suspended for, your period of SR22 probation may be even longer.
Usually, you have certain requirements concerning the filing of SR22 financial responsibility. In most states, you can choose not to get SR22 insurance at all, but if you do this you will have to wait five years to get your license back with no additional requirements. In order to get rid of the SR22 requirement before that, you will have to file insurance for a continuous period of 1-3 years, depending on the state.
If you fail to pay for your SR22 financial responsibility, then an SR26 form will be filed on your behalf as notice of a cancellation of your insurance. In this case, your license will be suspended again.
